Performance of Deep Blue Ocean for two pianos, featuring Blair McMillen and Stephen Gosling, pianos, in this concert inspired by American Modern Ensemble's Powerhouse Pianists concerts and albums, and directed and curated by Amanda Harberg, composer and pianist.
"Music in Montclair presents its opening concert of the 2016-2017 season on Sunday, December 4th, at 5:00pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair. Inspired by the American Modern Ensemble's “Powerhouse Pianists" concerts and albums, the event will feature two titanic virtuosos of the piano, Blair McMillen and Stephen Gosling, in a program of contemporary American masterpieces, including a world premiere.
Hailed by the critics as “Brilliant young stars… The dynamic duo of contemporary pianists…” who “share a messianic devotion to modern music” (The New York Times), Gosling and McMillen will shine their fierce, exciting artistry onto 376 piano keys. The program will feature the ecstatic minimalism of John Adams, the mystery and mysticism of Mary Ellen Childs, the mixing of jazz, pop and classical styles of Amanda Harberg, the explosion of coloristic and textural possibilities of Robert Paterson, and the playful sonic explorations of Doug Opel, as well as a brand new piece by New Jersey composer Thomas Parente. The composers will be present, either in person or by video, to speak about their work.
Music in Montclair is founded and artistically directed by composer/pianist Amanda Harberg, and is hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Montclair. The series seeks to bring to our community the highest level of performances of powerful music that ads meaning to people’s lives."
