Performance of The New Colossus as part of a vigil at St. John the Divine entitled “Truth is a Common Good: Our Unfinished Democracy,” Kent Tritle, conductor.
“Join us as we gather for a vigil of readings and music to mark the 250th anniversary of this great experiment in democracy we call the United States of America. Through reflection, story, and song, we will consider the ideals that have shaped our nation and the ongoing work of building a more just and inclusive society. Together, we will honor the generations who have contributed to our shared civic life while looking ahead with hope and purpose.
All are welcome to take part in this evening of remembrance, gratitude, and renewed commitment to the common good.”
About “The New Colossus”:
“When considering a text for a choral work that speaks to redefining America as a place grounded in love and acceptance, it is hard not to turn to The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. The poem, inscribed on a plaque inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, commemorates the statue’s purpose as a symbol of welcome for immigrants to the United States. Reflecting on my own ancestors and the world we live in today, it seems clear to me that all Americans are immigrants, regardless of race, creed, color, or identity. I long for a world in which we affirm our shared humanity not through division, but through diversity, common ideals, and a generosity of spirit.” – RP
